OTTAWA, May 18, 2012 – The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada, announced today that Justice Marie Deschamps has written to the Minister of Justice, the Honourable Robert Nicholson, to inform him that she will retire from the Supreme Court of Canada. Justice Deschamps’s retirement will be effective August 7, 2012.
“Justice Deschamps has made a very significant contribution to the Supreme Court and, more broadly, to the administration of justice in Canada. We will miss her wisdom, intelligence, keen wit and boundless energy. She has been a wonderful colleague and will always be a good friend”, said Chief Justice McLachlin.
For her part, Justice Deschamps said, “I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to participate in the work of the Court. I will leave behind a group of empathetic, respectful and dedicated judges. After 37 years working mostly in courtrooms, including 22 years on the Bench, I feel that it is time to explore other ways to be of service to society. There is so much to do, in so many areas.”
Justice Deschamps was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada on August 7, 2002, after having served on the Quebec Court of Appeal and the Quebec Superior Court.
Chief Justice McLachlin concluded by saying “I am certain that the Canadian government will give necessary care and consideration to the prompt appointment of a new justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.”

OTTAWA, le 18 mai 2012 – La très honorable Beverley McLachlin, Juge en chef du Canada, a annoncé aujourd’hui que la juge Marie Deschamps a écrit au ministre de la Justice, l’honorable Robert Nicholson, pour l’informer qu’elle entend se retirer de la Cour suprême du Canada. Son départ à la retraite prendra effet le 7 août 2012.
« La juge Deschamps a su apporter une contribution très importante aux travaux de la Cour suprême et, de manière plus générale, à l’administration de la justice au Canada. Sa sagesse, son intelligence, sa vivacité d’esprit et son énergie débordante nous manqueront. Elle a été et continue d’être une merveilleuse collègue, et elle demeurera toujours une bonne amie », a affirmé la juge en chef McLachlin.
Pour sa part, la juge Deschamps a déclaré : « Ce fut pour moi un privilège d’avoir pu participer aux travaux de la Cour. Je laisse un groupe de juges empathiques, respectueux et dévoués. Après 37 années à œuvrer principalement dans les salles de cour, dont 22 ans à titre de juge, j’estime qu’il est temps d’explorer d’autres façons de rendre service à la société. Il y a tant à faire, dans tant de domaines. »
La juge Deschamps a été nommée à la Cour suprême du Canada le 7 août 2002. Elle avait auparavant siégé à la Cour d’appel du Québec et à la Cour supérieure de cette province.
La juge en chef McLachlin a conclu en disant : « Je suis convaincue que le gouvernement canadien fera montre du soin et de la diligence nécessaires pour nommer rapidement un nouveau juge à la Cour suprême du Canada. »
